Why Interferential Current (IFC)?

IFC is commonly used in physiotherapy clinics because it can achieve higher levels of pain relief and reduction of swelling than TENS units. Often Physiotherapists will put heat or ice over the area while the IFC current is on to achieve even more pain relief, decrease swelling and increase blood flow.

IFC works by sending small electrical impulses through the skin. Interferential stimulation is characterized by two alternating current sine waves of differing frequencies that work together to produce an interferential current that is also known as a “Beat Frequency”. One of the two currents is usually held at 4000 Hz and the other can be held constant or varied over a range of 4001 to 4150 Hz. Because of the frequency, the interferential wave meets low impedance when crossing the skin to enter deep into soft tissues.

The interferential currents can stimulate sensory, motor and pain fibers. These large impulse fibers interfere with the transmission of the pain messages at the spinal cord level. This deep tissue penetration stimulates parasympathetic nerve fibers for increased blood flow and edema reduction. It utilizes the low electric current to stimulate muscle nerves to achieve the symptomatic relief of chronic intractable pain, post traumatic pain and post-surgical pain. In turn, reducing or eliminating the need for most pain-related drugs.

What is the Difference between IFC and TENS?

  1. IFC uses the stimulation of the inferential electricity that concentrates at the intersection point of the electrodes while TENS stimulates the generation of current that can flow through its leads to electrodes that are placed on specific locations on the person’s skin.
  2. IFC focuses its function primarily to block the pain message on the peripheral nerve fibers. On the other hand, a TENS unit’s electric reactions are for the sensory and motor nerve fibers.
  3. IFC usually delivers at 4000Hz versus TENS which modulates at a low frequency of 125Hz.
  4. IFC can deliver electric currents with much comfort than a TENS unit.
  5. IFC can reach greater depths and offers electrotherapy to a larger number of tissues than TENS.
  6. IFC stimulates circulation, and TENS can stimulate endorphin production.
  7. IFC is used to manage edema, pain, and inflammation which are caused by trauma or degenerative alterations with the involvement of soft tissues while TENS can only treat conditions with low risk involved like treating back pains. It is contraindicated for pregnant women.
  8. IFC has a role in stimulating healing and restoration of tissues while TENS only focuses on controlling pain.

Russian Muscle Stimulation

Russian Muscle Stimulation was originally developed by the Russian Olympic team for strength and muscle mass enhancement. It is used in various rehabilitation and physiotherapy clinics for muscle strengthening.  Now you also can increase muscle strength at the convenience of your own home.

Although Russian muscle stimulation is similar to EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation), the high frequency of a Russian stimulator vs. EMS allows for a deeper muscle penetration providing a stronger and more complete contraction of the muscle fibers. Unlike other handheld Russian devices, the BioMed® Fit is programmed with the 10-50-10 protocol providing a TRUE Russian experience usually only found in clinical models.

The BioMed Fit is made in the USA and has a 2 year manufacturers limited warranty.

The BioMed® Fit is a TRUE Russian Stimulator and Interferential handheld device. Originally developed in 1971 by the Russian Olympic team for strength and muscle mass enhancement, is now mostly used for muscle strengthening in the United States. Russian stimulation Is Not EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation). A Russian stimulator has a Carrier Frequency of 2500 Hz while an EMS device is around 250 Hz.

Russian provides a deeper muscle penetration providing a stronger and more complete contraction of the muscle fibers. The BioMed® Fit is programmed with 10-50-10 Russian protocol providing a TRUE Russian experience usually only found in clinical models. Other handheld Russian devices DO NOT HAVE PROTOCOLS!!

A “TRUE” Russian Stimulator has both a high frequency of 2500 Hz (50% duty cycle at 50 Hz) combined with a 10-50-10 Russian protocol.

The 10-50-10 Russian protocol is as follows:

  • 10 seconds of stimulation (muscle contraction).
  • 50 second rest period.
  • This is repeated 10 times.
    • There are a total of 11 cycles (1st cycle is an Amplitude adjustment period).
    • Amplitude keys will not respond when cycle starts
    • Ramp ON = 1 sec
    • Ramp OFF = 1 sec
    • ON TIME = 10 seconds
    • OFF TIME = 48 seconds, counts down on LCD. After final cycle device beeps and shuts off.
    • Total time elapsed to complete the protocol is 10 minutes

Interferential Current (IFC) Therapy works by sending small electrical impulses through the skin.
